DVA’s Travel for Treatment Program Helps with the Cost of Getting to Medical Appointments

The Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) provides a comprehensive Travel for Treatment program to assist Australian Defence Force veterans and their families with transport costs for medical treatment within Australia, covered by their Veteran Card.

Key features include:

• Reimbursement of travel expenses such as private vehicle allowance, parking, tolls, public transport, meals, and accommodation.

• Access to Booked Car with Driver (BCWD) service, offering pre-arranged and pre-paid transport to medical appointments.

• Coverage for emergency and non-emergency ambulance transport when medically required.

• Support for permanent or temporary relocation related to accessing appropriate treatment.

• Claims can be lodged online via MyService or by submitting form D0800 with receipts.

Travel entitlements vary depending on the date of travel and treatment location, with claims after 1 July 2026 assessed under the improved Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (MRCA).

Travel related to Veterans’ Review Board hearings or medical examinations at DVA’s request may also be reimbursed, but not for Administrative Review Tribunal hearings or usual rehabilitation activities.

For journeys before 1 July 2026, claims are assessed under the relevant Act at the time (MRCA, DRCA, or Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986).
